An Interesting Family Group: including Medals and Related Items to Second Lieutenant A. E. Amey, Royal Air Force, Observer to Captain W. E. Johns, Creator of "Biggles" (a) British War and Victory Medals ( 2. Lieut. A. E. Amey. R.A.F. ), with related next-of-kin bronze plaque, this in its card case of issue with enclosure document, extremely fine (b) Aviator's silk scarf, with original letter from W. E. Johns relating how he came to take and keep the scarf. "I enclose the scarf. It is simply the piece of silk most flying men wear around their necks to prevent chafing at altitudes. I took it at first to cover the poor boy's face and afterwards as I could not get a bandage to tie up my own face which was bleeding badly.The Huns of course took everything else he had. I have carried the piece of silk ever since thinking you would probably like to have it". (c) A large portrait photograph of Amey in uniform, 17" x 24 " (d) British War and Victory Medals ( Pte. O. G. Amey. The Queen's R. ), extremely fine , together with studio photograph of the recipient in uniform, a letter from his brother Alfred, and other related documents (e) 9ct. gold pocket watch ( Hallmarks for Birmingham 1928-29 ), inscribed to B. G. Amey, on his retirement, in fitted case Basil George Amey was the father of A. E. and O. G. Amey (f) Next-of-kin bronze plaque (William Joseph Lines) , in cardcase of issue, together with two photographs of Rifleman Lines in Royal Sussex Regiment Rifleman Lines was the brother-in-law of Private O. G. Amey (g) British Empire Medal, G.V.R. (William George Lines), extremely fine , in case of issue William Lines was the father of Rifleman W. J. Lines (h) A large quantity of family letters, postcards, photographs and documents, including photographs of the memorial at Queen's Road Baptist Church, Wimbledon (which includes the names of both A. Amey and W. J. Lines), W. J. Lines' grave, the Menin Gate memorial Ypres, together with three albums of postcards, many of France and Italy, and three novels won by the three boys while attending Queen's Road Baptist Sunday School, Wimbledon (lot)
