An interesting oval jade plaque/amulet reputedly touched by Queen Anne and supposedly presented to her almoner, Sir John Dolden (1625-1686). together with a piece of period cloth embroidered 'Queen Anne's Gown' and another fragment reputedly from the queen's mourning gown. Accompanied by various handwritten labels and newspaper cuttings detailing Sir John's biography and the practise/believe of a monarch touching ill subjects to heal 'The King's Evil' The divine healing powers of monarch was particularly practised by Charles II who claimed to have touched over 90,000 subjects during his reign. Queen Anne was one of the last English monarchs to perform the ceremonial ritual, perhaps most famously on an infant Dr. Samuel Johnson who suffered from scrofula, yet to no avail. A memorial to Archibishop John Dolden by Gringling Gibbons stands within York Minster.
