AN ITALIAN HALF-SHAFFRON WITH LATER ETCHED AND GILT DECORATION
FIRST HALF OF 17 T H CENTURY
AN ITALIAN HALF-SHAFFRON WITH LATER ETCHED AND GILT DECORATION First half of 17 t h Century Of russet steel, drawn up to a medial ridge over the muzzle and with raised flanges about the eye openings, fitted with standing ear-guards, poll-plate and decorated tubular brass plume-holder, etched with later bands involving running patterns of lozenge-shaped cartouches filled and bordered by leaf ornament, additional narrow bands of half- flowerheads, all parcel-gilt (the poll-plate not gilt), the etching involving contrasting granular elements throughout, and profusely studded with domed brass rivets and with plain turned edges (the poll-plate and one ear-guard each with small rust holes and cracks, escutcheon removed, the internal leather torn). 22½ i n (57.1cm)
