An Italian sculpted white marble figural panel depicting scenes from the Life of Joseph, after the 13th century reliefs in the Church of S. Restituta, Naples, late 19th / early 20th century, depicting three scenes from the original carved in high relief: Joseph telling his dreams to Jacob; Joseph sold to the Ishmaelites; and Jacob sending Joseph into the Wilderness, each surrounded by a drilled foliate border, the individual rectangular scenes 33cm high, 35cm wide; the overall dimensions 40.5cm high, 116cm wide, 7.5cm deep With a modern stained pine stand The Chiesa di Santa Restituta was built in the 6th century, in honour of the Carthaginian martyr who met her death under Diocletian's reign in the late 3rd century AD. The church was then incorporated into the Cathedral of Naples built on the same site in the early 13th century The original panel in the church of S. Restituta after which the example here is carved is one of two, the other showing scenes connected with Januarius / Samson. Literature: See G.H.
