Broad, slightly curved 23 1/2 inch single edged blade with broad, shallow fuller. Silver-gilt hilt mounts comprising: fluted scabbard cover; quillon block of rectangular section embossed with oval cartouches; straight quillons of octagonal section with button finials; shaped ferrule cast with wavy banding. One-piece grip of elephant ivory finely carved with lionhead pommel with gaping jaws, the eyes hollowed for stone mounts, now missing. Each side of grip set with oval silver escutcheon below ribbon swags, one side engraved Thomas Paine/U.S. Navy. No scabbard. Condition: Blade with dark patina with some areas of deep pitting, the base inscribed in white paint W.301. Guard slightly loose and showing wear to gilt finish. Grip showing chipping and cracks. One eye retaining silver setting for stone.
