AN ORMOLU-MOUNTED SÈVRES VASE DE RHODES modelled in three sections, the white body of tapering oviform and painted by Jules-Eugène Humbert in a muted pastel palette with figures of young girls allegorical of Spring and Autumn, Spring seated in an idyllic garden flanked by pink flowers in full bloom, smiling as she observes a flock of fluttering yellow butterflies, the girl wearing white and apricot robes and with a pink stole swirling around her shoulders, the scene enclosed within a wreath of branches entwined with ribbon, flowers and meandering boughs, the reverse with Autumn seated shivering in a garden of withered branches bereft of flowers and with the last swallows of summer in flight, within a similar cartouche of autumnal foliage, the detachable baluster neck and shoulder modelled with two loop handles enriched in green and gilding and painted with a shaded lilac ground reserved with white strapwork cartouches and with green and gilt foliage, the flared stem similarly painted within horizontal green borders reserved with gilt foliage and key-pattern, the ormolu mounts comprising a detachable beaded ring at the shoulder, a fixed ring at the lower body and a square base, artist's signature in green script below Spring, iron-red and green printed marks and date codes for 1862 39in. (99cm.) high
