AN UNUSUAL CARVED DARK RED AND BLACK LACQUER PEAR-SHAPED VASE, HU SIX-CHARACTER CHASED MARK WRITTEN IN MANCHU DATED TO THE 8TH YEAR OF THE REIGN OF QIANLONG, CORRESPONDING TO 1743, AND OF THE PERIOD Finely carved on two sides with a female immortal, probably Xiwangmu, seated in a pavilion and surrounded by her attendants holding large peaches, while numerous scholars and attendants bearing further peaches and gifts wait on the terrace below to present their offerings and greetings, some seated at a table conversing and drinking while they wait, with further scholars seen in various pavilions spotted throughout the mountainous setting or crossing bridges over the rushing rivers, with a poem carved in official script on either side of the neck between two bronze handles cast as stag heads, with metal-lined interior covered with a thin layer of lacquer and metal base on which the mark is chased within a rectangle 15 3/8 in. (39 cm.) high
