Beschreibung:

An unusual Charles II stumpwork and tortoiseshell banded work box, circa 1675, of rectangular form, the hinged cover with a central figural scene depicting the Sacrifice of Isaac, and with animals including a lion and birds to the corners; the body with further scrolled and foliate embroidery overall, raised on scrolled giltwood feet and with cherub apron, elements possibly associated; the later lined and fitted interior with traces of the original lining, 24cm high, 41cm wide, 31cm deep The flattened shape and pronounced banding on this casket recall later 17th century examples, such as a work box in the collection of the V&A (T.6-1926). A stumpwork decorated casket dated 1677, which shows similarities to the present lot particularly in the use of tortoiseshell banding, was sold at Bonhams, Fine English Furniture and Works of Art including The Richmond Collection of Early English Needlework, 2 March 2011, lot 16
