An unusual George III steel 'master' key set by Silk, circa 1800, the one ward and two latch keys folding onto a cruciform plate, engraved with a crest within a Garter belt, under a coronet, 17.5cm (6 7/8in) long extended, with a detached label 'Hatfield House James 1st Marquess of Salisbury', in its red leather case crest of James Cecil, 1st Marquess of Salisbury, KG, PC (1748-1823). He succeeded as 7th Earl of Salisbury in 1780 and in 1789 was created Marquess of Salisbury. He was made a Knight of the Garter in 1793. Hatfield House was built in 1611 by Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury and Chief Minister to King James I and has been the home of the Cecil family ever since. Condition report disclaimer
