Yaggy's Anatomical Study Presenting the Skeleton, Muscles, Arteries, Veins and Nerves. Also Four Life-Size Manikins of the Body, the Head, the Eye and the Ear, the Whole Constructed under the Supervision of Dr. Henry M. Lyman, Dr. Christian Fenger, Dr. W. F. Smith, and Dr. D.W. Graham....And plates showing the Effects of Alcohol & Narcotics on the Human System. Supervised by Prof. Daniel Wilkins, A.M. Chicago: Western Publishing House, 1915. There are several sections to this study. The outer cloth-covered boards are sectioned to become a stand for the charts. There is an internal board with the publication information on one side, and the first manikin of the torso on the other. There are several flip-sections: the ribs and lungs (2 sections) fold away to reveal the internal lungs and heart, which has another "layer" to reveal the inner workings of that organ. The peritoneum folds away to reveal the intestines, which then fold away to reveal the stomach and liver (which both have another layer under this one. The next section has an arm and leg on one side, each with five layers. The central section has 13 lithographed pages backed with linen, each 15.5 x 27 in. Attached to the rear board are the head, ear and eye, each with multiple layers. The first edition of Yaggy's Anatomical Study dates from 1886. This later edition has updated information, particularly relating to the epidemiology of plague, malaria and yellow fever, and typhus, and devotes three pages to these diseases. (Of note, the connection between mosquitoes and malaria and yellow fever was only made around the turn of the century, even though malaria was starting to be investigated in the 1880s, and was confirmed during the construction of the Panama Canal.) The disease section was supervised by Dr. J.N. Hurty, State Health Commissioner of Indiana. Maybe more significantly, four and a half pages are devoted to the negative effects of alcohol (the remaining half page to smoking), presumably enlisting the scientific community for more "ammunition" to pass and ratify the 18th Amendment (Prohibition), which of course happened four years later. An interesting piece of scientific history with sociological implications. Condition: Lower left corners of flip pages with water damage that has lifted some of the paper away. The damage does not extend to the images. There is wear to the cloth of the covers, especially the corners. Part of the key for the arm-leg page is torn away in the lower right, and the outermost arm "layer" has a couple of bends. Overall still in very good condition, with colors bright, metal tabs to hold the layers together still present.
