Condition : scattered light soiling; boards scuffed and rubbed, head and foot of spine reinforced; bookplate. first edition thus complete with half-title page. First Danish printing of Lt. Pedersen's famous illustrations for Andersen's fairy tales, commissioned jointly by the Leipzig publisher Carl Lorck (who first issued them with a German translation in 1849) and Reitzel (who serialized them the same year, then reissued unsold sheets in book form as above). This volume contains Andersen's first two fairy-tale cycles of 45 stories including his most famous, “The Emperor's New Clothes,” “The Steadfast Tin Soldier,” “The Little Mermaid,” “The Princess and the Pea,” “Thumbelina,” “The Snow Queen,” “The Nightingale” and “The Ugly Duckling.” Pedersen's pictures are among the earliest and most often reprinted illustrations of Andersen’s fairy tales ever published.
