Place: Strawberry-Hill Publisher: Thomas Kirgate Date: 1765-1771 Description: 5 volumes in 3 (including A Catalogue of Engravers...).xiii, [1], 182, [20]; [2], 182, [55]; [2], 167, [12]; x, [2], 140, 14, 20, [7] pp. With 113 copper-engraved plates. (4to) 9x7¼, period full blue morocco elaborately tooled in gilt, raised spine bands, morocco lettering pieces, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Second Edition Exceptional copy of what is undoubtedly Horace Walpole's most significant work, a handsome, wide-margined example, in elegant full morocco binding. Armorial bookplate of Charles Tyrell dated 1766, in Vol. I; later bookplates in the other volumes. Lot Amendments Condition: Just a little rubbing to extremities and spine ribs; some minor offset from the plates and other slight aging within, 1" chip to top margin of Kkk2 in Vol. II; Pp2 in Vol. IV torn halfway up gutter; near fine overall.
