Pasted-in slip stating: 'The present Exhibition is the result of a residence of nearly three years, and a journey of 40,000 miles ... the object of the artist being to represent the natives and scenery of New Zealand and South Australia, with unexaggerated truth and fidelity.' Loosely-inserted invitation card, printed in gold, made out to the editor of the Gentleman's Magazine , for a private view of the exhibition at the Egyptian Hall, Piccadilly, Saturday 4 April. G.F. Esq.') on the list of subscribers, and 197 copies subscribed for. This is Angas's first illustrated work, published the year before he sailed for Australia; and 2 other books by the artist, Savage Life and Scenes in Australia and New Zealand (London, 1847; 2 vols., vol. I with half-title and frontispiece detached) and The Wreck of the Admella (London, 1874). A family gift to George Angas. Together with 4 a.l.s. by George French Angas all 8°; the first letter, one page, from 104 Drummond St., Euston Square, dated 'Saturday' [no month or year] requesting [?]his publisher that a missing plate be forwarded to his bookbinder 'Mr Proudfoot' in 'George Street/Drummond St'; the second letter, one page, dated Drummond St., 31 January 1840, asking J. [?]Hogarth, to let the bearer have two named drawings 'for Mr. Giles,' also stating 'I shall have a proof of a plate I have just completed ready on Friday,' and asking for 'one or two pounds' to overcome house-keeping difficulties; the third letter, 4pp., dated Drummond St., 28 July 1849, to [?]his publisher, trying to overcome problems 'in the delivery department' experienced by overseas subscribers to '"Kaffirs Illustrated"'; the final letter, 3½pp., dated 48 Norland Square, Feb. 10 [18]75, to S.W. Silver, thanks him for a cheque, returns 'Captain [?]Monerley's letter,' and says he will 'endeavour to hear his paper at R.G.S. on 22nd.' He has been suffering from 'neuraglia in the head' but 'as soon as I feel able I will attend to your Catalogue.' He adds: 'Our next article is Cassava -- the staff of life of Tropical America. Let me have any books you receive on colonial subjects for review ....' [possibly for the Proceedings of the Zoological Society , of which Angas was a member]. (10)
