Hawkins or W. Wing, printed by Charles Lovell, M. & N. Hanhart, Hullmandel & Walton, wood-engraved vignette illustrations. (some even browning to most of text leaves and frontispiece; short marginal tears, repaired). Later half morocco (some light wear and repairs). Provenance: New South Wales Library of Parliament (gilt stamp on top cover). FIRST EDITION of this important work, including outstanding portraits, particularly of the Zulus. The plates also include views of Cape Town, Hottentot Holland, Somerset West and Durban. "The three large works by George French Angas the 'Kaffirs.' New Zealanders and South Austratilia are amongst the most important of the illustrated travel books of their periodof the three works, the 'Kaffirs' is the most uncommon" (Tooley).
