ANGAS, George French (1822-1886). South Australia Illustrated . London: Thomas M'Lean, 1847. 2° (540 x 370mm). Hand-coloured tinted lithographic title, letterpress title, lithographic dedication to Queen Adelaide, 2pp list of subscribers bound in at the end, 60 hand-coloured tinted lithographic plates. (Lithographic title detached, titles, dedication and one page with a discreet library stamp.) Contemporary purple half morocco (spine restored and laid down, rubbed, lower cover detached, upper joint cracked). George Angas, son of George Fife Angas, one of the founders of South Australia, was born in Durham, and after studying drawing and lithography in London, went travelling; firstly to Malta and Sicily in 1841-42, and in 1843 to Australia, in 1844 to New Zealand, and later on his return to England he spent a year in South Africa. This work was originally issued in 10 parts. Abbey Travel 577; Ferguson IV 4458.
