Beschreibung:

APOLLO 13: TWO LARGE PIECES OF KAPTON FOIL FLOWN ON THE COMMAND MODULE "ODYSSEY."2 Segments of Kapton Mylar foil, approximately 101 x 106 mm and 78 x 70 mm, with general flight wear.
Provenance: NASA employee Bill Whipkey (accompanying document).
The accompanying provenance document states: "This Kapton Mylar foil is from the Apollo 13 Command Module (CSM Serial # CSM 109). Kapton foil provided thermal protection for the CM and upon return to Earth was easily removed from the spacecraft. The foil was often used for presentation purposes and was given to Bill Whipkey, a NASA employee in 1970. Bill prepared numerous presentations/displays and these Mylar pieces remained unused. It was in his possession until his passing in 2015.
Bill identified this Kapton foil to me as part of the Apollo 13 Command Module prior to his death. In addition, the foil was stored with a yellow North American Rockwell Corporation - Space Division 'Temporary Parts Removal Tag.' It clearly states 'Forward Heat Shield Mylar, C/M,' dated 27 May 1970. / Sandy Clarkson / The Right Stuff Space."
The document also includes an image of the North American Rockwell Temporary Parts Removal Tag for the Kapton foil.
Kapton polymer film was developed by DuPont in the 1960s, and has been used in printed circuits as well as insulation for satellites and spacecraft. It remains stable under an extremely wide range of temperature conditions, and was used on the Lunar Modules and Command Modules on the Apollo lunar missions. The present pieces are larger than what is often found on the market.
