[Apollo 15] Portrait of James Irwin and the Lunar Rover in front of Mount Hadley. David Scott, 26 July - 7 August 1971, EVA 1. Printed 1971. Vintage chromogenic print on fiber-based Kodak paper [NASA AS15–86-11603].20.3×25.4 cm (8×10 in), with “A Kodak Paper” watermarks on the verso, numbered “NASA AS15–86-11603” in red in top margin (NASA Manned Spacecraft Center, Houston, Texas). Literature: LIFE, 20 August 1971, ppg. 26–27; Space: A History of Space Exploration in Photographs, Chaikin, pg. 120; Spacecam: Photographing the Final Frontier from Apollo to Hubble, Hope, pg. 29. This amazing photograph was taken by David Scott near the LM at the end of the first EVA. At Apollo 15’s desolate Moon base beneath the shadowy mass of Mt. Hadley, astronaut James Irwin tends to the ungainly but precious lunar rover, the $13 million Moon buggy that carried Irwin and Dave Scott 18 miles through the lunar highlands and made the latest space venture, in Scott’s words, “exploration at its greatest.” On this meticulously rehearsed and specifically scientific mission, Scott and Irwin explored some of the Moon’s most rugged and treacherous terrain with the childlike glee of first-time tourists and the practiced eyes of trained geologists. (LIFE, 20 August 1971, pp. 26–27). “Vistas without parallel in human experience surrounded the crews on the great voyages of exploration.” Apollo 17 astronaut Harrison Schmitt (NASA SP-250, p. 265). [Original NASA caption for the photograph] APOLLO 15 EVA ---- Astronaut James B. Irvin, lunar module pilot, works at the Lunar Roving Vehicle during the first Apollo 15 lunar surface extravehicular activity (EVA-1) at the Hadley-Apennine landing site. The shadow of the Lunar Module “Falcon” is in the foreground. This view is looking northeast, with Mount Hadley in the background. This photograph was taken by Astronaut David R. Scott, commander.
