Type: 5a,b:114Gk, 5c:111Gk. 33 lines of commentary. First two initials in liquid gold or colours on gold ground added probably at time of binding, early quiring and foliation. (First lower margin reinforced on verso, small marginal repairs in first quire, second initial worn, light bleed-through from liquid gold, occasional spotting and light staining, mostly at fore-edge.) Late 18th-century Austrian red morocco gilt by Josef Lehrner, signed at spine foot: sides with insecting lozenges of white and green leather, the white painted with floral decoration, at centre a white leather on-lay painted with a lyre with green leather on-lay, green leather spine labels, painted white on-lays at head and foot of spine (a little light rubbing, minor loss of on-lays). Provenance : contemporary marginal annotations in a humanist hand (washed). A FINELY BOUND COPY OF THE EDITIO PRINCEPS. The Argonautica is the best surviving account of the mythical story of Jason and the Argonauts and the quest for the Golden Fleece. Janus Lascaris, the Greek refugee scholar employed by Lorenzo de'Medici as his librarian, not only edited the text but designed the type with which it was printed. He originally conceived the type as an upper case alphabet only, and added the lower case specifically for printing the scholia in this edition, and it makes its first appearance here. (See R.
