A Plain and Literal Translation of the Arabian Night's Entertainments, Now Entitled The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night.
London: Grolier Society, 1885-1888 [actually issued ca. 1897, as per Penzer]. 12 vols. Large 8vo. (253 x 155 mm, 10 x 6 inches). Frontispieces and plates by Albert Letchford, each in 3 states, printed tissue guards. Bound in contemporary full vellum, covers with green morocco onlays, with elaborate gilt-stamped middle eastern motif, spines ruled and lettered in gilt with brown morocco gilt-stamped star onlays, gilt board edges and turn-ins, silk floral endpapers, t.e.g. Condition : Front hinge of Volume I with one-inch split at top, some rubbing to edges, some boards show bowing, slight discoloring to vellum, small tears at edges of pastedowns. a fine copy of the Edition de Luxe, this number 14 of only twenty copies; one of the rarest editions editions of burton’s translation of The Arabian Nights. ABPC records just one copy at auction in the last 30 years. This edition has the the Letchford illustrations in the 3 states. Penzer pp 120-125
