A rare first edition of which no copy has been traced on the market and with only five registered in Italian libraries. The comedy by Aretino describes the adventures of a beautiful courtesan and her four suitors: Orfinio, young, ardent and truly in love, has to deal with Captain Tinca, a vicious and miserly old Venetian and a Roman, Amuleus, who pretends to be in love (Treccani). 8vo (146 x 98mm). Printer's device on title, woodcut initial, large portrait of Aretino within woodcut border on verso of final leaf (minimal staining). Elegant brown calf with triple gilt fillet signed Bauzonnet-Trautz, spine decorated in gilt, title on red morocco label, gilt edges and inlays, decorated endpapers (light wear and touches of restoration to joints). Provenance: early inscription on title mentioning later editions.
