Carel Visser (1928-2015) Romulus and Remus (1984) Signed, dated 84 and dedicated voor Erdal on the feather Collage on cardboard in artist's frame, 50.5 x 70.3 cm Provenance: Collection Geertjan Visser (1931-2010), Retie, thence by descent Note: Geertjan Visser (1931-2010) was, together with his brother Martin (1922-2009), one of the main and most influential collectors of his generation in the Netherlands. Today, the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo houses over 400 works from their impressive collection, including works by artists like Lucio Fontana Anselm Kiefer and Bruce Nauman The renowned ‘Collection Visser’ also includes art by the third brother, the successful sculptor Carel Visser (1928-2015). * Condition report available upon request
Jan Schoonhoven (1914-1994) T85-14 (1985) Signed and dated 1985 lower right Titled lower left Signed, titled, dated 1985 and annotated o.i. inkttekening on the reverse Indian ink on paper, 49.8 x 32.9 cm Note: A founding member of the Nul group in 1960 in Delft, Jan Schoonhoven developed an artistic style governed by order, geometry, and repetition. In his drawings from this period, variations of particular motifs, such as intersecting rows of horizontal and vertical lines, recur. His later ink drawings, such as this present lot, evidence freer, more fluid delineations. Schoonhoven’s minimalistic ideology makes his ink drawings a particularly interesting point of his artistic career. Although his colour palette and materials remained restricted, he departed from ridged geometric symmetry and experimented with expressive, bold, painterly strokes. Despite the varying strokes of each ink drawing, Schoonhoven was able to masterfully serialise the drawings with his selective colour palette and by working within a limited range of sizes. ‘T85-14’ is an identification number rather than a title. T indicates that it is a drawing (after the Dutch word for drawing ‘tekening’), 85 refers to the year it was made, and 14 signifies that it was his 14th drawing made in 1985. * Condition report available upon request
