A PAINTED STUCCO MALE HEAD Ancient region of Gandhara, 4th-5th century The elongated face to set large open eyes, aquiline nose and full lips, the hair arranged in a hairstyle that very much recalls the portraiture of the Roman era. 29 cm high Provenance: Italian private collection. The Gandhara stucco sculpture generally conveys a different feeling than the stone statuary. While the latter appears more hieratic, set as it is on volumes of more rigid formal scans, the stucco one is more free from conventions, as a consequence of the malleability of the material which also allows a widespread use of pictorial coatings, thanks to which the faces of the figures take on a more human aspect, even closer to the ideal advocated centuries earlier by Hellenistic and Roman art. * The present lot is offered with export license.
