Atlas maritimus novus , or the New Sea-Atlas. Being a book of new and large charts of the sea-coasts, capes ... in most of the known parts of the world . London: Richard Mount and Thomas Page 1721 [but after 1732]. A rare English maritime atlas , complete with Haselden ’ s world map . The work was first published in 1702. The scientifically-oriented ‘Mapp of the Known World’ by the mathematician Thomas Haselden (d. 1740) ‘is rare', Shirley affirms, ‘and is only found in this atlas’. In fact, we have only been able to trace 3 other copies of this map: British Library; William Clements Library, University of Michigan; and the Peabody Essex Museum. This folding map on Mercator’s Projection is surrounded by an engraved text explaining Haselden’s new method for measuring distances through application of his ‘scale’. There is a second world map by Seller, in its final state without his name on the title [Shirley 460]. Among the 19 charts are two of the East Indies, two of the West Indies [the ‘Generall Chart for the West Indies’ is on Mercator’s Projection with an inset explanation of how to work out distances], one of South America also on Mercator’s Projection, and a final chart of ‘New Found Land New Scotland New England and New York’. Six charts are new to this edition, including the ‘Coast of Barbary’ and the ‘Caribe Islands’. The imprint on the final chart, ‘Willm. Mount & Tho.
