Attributed to Jacob Maentel (American, 1763-1863) Pair of Portraits of Lydia Anne (Earnst) and Samuel Richardson. Unsigned. Watercolor on paper, c. 1812, depicting the woman and gentleman each standing in a landscape, the woman wears a blue dress and a sheer white lacy bonnet and holds a rose in her hand, the gentleman, dressed in blue trousers and waistcoat with tails, white shirt and polka dotted cravat, holds a top hat in one hand, 10 7/8 x 8 3/8 in., mounted in period molded wood frames. Condition: Toning, light stains, creases, tears. Note: A penciled inscription on the back panel of the portrait of Lydia and a paper under the backing reads "Lydia Anne Earnst was born in Yorktown York State Pa. in 1793. Was married to Samuel Richardson in 1812. Six weeks after this picture was taken by pencil/Died Dec. 19 1880. Aged 87 yrs 10 mo. 24 days." The backing panel of Samuel is inscribed "Samuel Richardson Born 1786 died 1859."
