Attributed to John Trotter (Irish d.1792) Little Boy in a Red Suit Pointing Towards a Tent Encampment of Militia Oil on canvas, 59 x 46.5cm (23.25 x 18.25'') Note: John Trotter went to the Dublin Schools in 1755, where he excelled as a student and was sent to Italy by his father c.1759. According to the Knight of Glin and Professor Anne Crookshank ''His landscape backgrounds are always picturesquely portrayed and are often Italianate in feeling''. This is clearly the case in the current work. Furthermore Crookshank and Glin draw attention to Trotter's treatment of the human figure, specifically the legs saying that the artist possessed ''a strange mannerism of reducing the size of leg from the knee downwards which gives a stilted effect.'' This feature in also clearly evident in the current work.
