A Portrait of William Stodart oil on canvas with label on verso identifying the sitter unsigned, unframed 35 1/2 x 27 1/4 inches. David Wilkie was a renowned Scottish artist and William Stodart was an early patron of his work. Carved on the top rail of the canvas frame is "painted by Sir David Wilkie RA" and a paper label identifies the subject, William Stodart. In the book Sir David Wilkie by Lord Ronald Sutherland Gower, a trustee of the National Portrait Gallery London, published in 1902, a chronological list of his works includes two 1802 portraits of William Stodart. Additionally, a list of his "pictures which cannot at present be traced" includes two portraits of Stodart. The painting was purchased circa 1965-1970 in Washington, D.C.
