ATTRIBUTED TO YOUQUA (1840-1880) INTERIOR SCENES: LADY READING; LADY PLAYING A PIPA A pair, one with the artist's trade label verso, oil on canvas, unframed Each 27.5 x 20cm. approx. (2) * In `The China Trade` by Carl L. Crossman (Princeton, 1972), the author notes that a problem with the attribution of pictures like this arises from the fact that `so many artists worked with lesser painters to execute the innumerable works demanded for export`. Although Crossman records Youqua's use of a label, he also notes that some canvases of domestic themes `tend to be somewhat sloppy in painting and drafting` with the exception of works by Youqua `and other painters of comparable skill`.
