AUBIGNÉ, Théodore-Agrippa d' (1552-1630). Les Avantures du Baron de Faeneste, comprinses en quatre parties. Au Dezert: aux despens de l'Autheur [Geneva: P. Aubert], 1630. 8° (167 x 99mm). Woodcut opening initials. (Spotting to beginning and end leaves.) Dark blue morocco by Niedrée, blind-ruled covers with gilt floral corner pieces, spine directly lettered and with repeated fleuron, gilt turn-ins and edges (joints a little rubbed). Provenance : P. Guy Pellion (ex-libris) -- note of purchase from L. Giraud-Badin in 1926.

Aubigné's picaresque novel included himself in the character of Enay (from the Greek 'einai' to be) contrasted with the hero Faeneste (from 'phainesthai' to appear).
