Beschreibung:

Nuremberg and Leipzig: Friedrich Campe, 1802. 2° (415 x 260mm). Letterpress title (verso blank), dedication to Maria Fedorovna (verso blank), 2pp. preface dated September 1802, 6pp. explanatory text. 9 engraved plates (1 uncoloured, 8 present in two states: uncoloured and finely coloured by hand), 6 by Moisy of Paris, one signed 'A.P. Eisen fec.', 2 unsigned, five of the uncoloured state plates with some contemporary hand-colouring by another hand. Original blue glazed paper-covered boards (covers slightly rubbed, small sections of the backstrip lacking), modern blue cloth box, blue morocco lettering piece to 'spine'. A FINE UNSOPHISTICATED COPY OF THIS RARE ARTIST'S PATTERN-BOOK OF UNUSUALLY LARGE SIZE, UNRECORDED IN ANY OF THE USUAL BIBLIOGRAPHIES, WITH HIGH QUALITY HAND-COLOURED PLATES. The eight hand-coloured plates recall the earlier work of John Edwards in London and perhaps more significantly the contemporary work of Gerard van Spaendonck in Paris. Six of the plates were evidently engraved in Paris by Alexandre Moisy (1763-c.1827). Matters are somewhat confused however by the two extremely striking plates of bouquets, both clearly by the same hand, with one signed by local artist Anton Paul Eisen who was born in 1777 and worked in Nuremberg. Both the engraving and the hand-colouring are of an unusually high quality and are executed with an attention to botanical correctness not usually found in pattern-books of this type. The bouquets are particularly fine and convey the depth of colour that make up the petals of a fine bloom. OCLC (listing only the Harvard, Houghton Library copy).
