Avec ses formes fragmentées et ses touches pointillistes très colorées, Portrait d'homme préfigure l'incursion d'Auguste Herbin dans le cubisme. Saisissante d'audace, cette œuvre voit le jour à une année charnière de la carrière d'Herbin durant laquelle il expose quelques œuvres au Salon de la Section d'Or.
Déterminante pour le cubisme français au sens large, l'année 1912 connaît non seulement la fondation du groupe de ladite « Section d'Or » mais aussi les trois grandes expositions collectives qui fédèrent les artistes cubistes et les révèlent au public. C'est aussi cette année-là que Jean Metzinger et Albert Gleizes publient leur essai Du Cubisme, qui s'impose alors comme l'étude théorique la plus exhaustive et la plus cohérente du mouvement en plein essor.
In its striking fragmentation of form and pointillist application of vivid dots of colour, Portrait d’homme boldly announces Auguste Herbin’s foray into cubism. Painted in 1912, the present work dates to a pivotal year in the artist’s career when Herbin exhibited some of his works in the Salon de la Section d'Or .
1912 was a halcyon year for French Cubism. It was the year that the French Cubist school formed their group La Section d’Or; it was the year of the first of three ground-breaking exhibitions that united the Cubists artists and presented them to the public; and it was the year that Jean Metzinger together with his colleague Albert Gleizes published Du Cubisme — the most comprehensive and coherent survey to date of the theories and aims of the new movement.
