AUGUSTINUS, Aurelius (St., 354-430). De trinitate . [Strassburg: Printer of Henricus Ariminensis Type 1 (Heinrich Eggestein), not after 1474]. Royal 2° (390x282mm). Collation: [1-4 10 5 12 6-9 10 10 8 11 6 ] (1/1r Sentencia...de libro retractionum , letter by Augustine to Aurelius, Bp. of Carthage, 1/1v chapter heading to book I, text, 6/1r chapter heading to book 9, text, 11/6 blank). 106 leaves. 47 lines, double column. Type: 1:120(118)G. 2- to 3-line initials, capital strokes, chapter headings and headlines in red, 7- to 9-line initial spaces opening each book left blank (except the first), MS. quiring in upper corner, MS. guide-letters. (Light dampstain at fore-edge of 8/9, small wormholes, affecting a few letters only in final quire.) Twentieth-century citron calf over pastepaper boards, one contemporary red pigskin index tab. FIRST EDITION of Augustine's important systematic work on the Trinity. Kurt Ohly ( Gutenberg-Jahrbuch 1956, 1957) identified the books printed in this eponymous shop with Georg Reyser, but that identification probably extends to books printed in type 3 only. Type 1 may have been used in the shop of Eggestein, where it appears as a heading type in his Ludolphus de Saxonia (Goff L-337). HC *2034; GW 2925; BMC I, 78 (IC. 882); Goff A-1342; Pellechet 1540; BSB A-876
