McCormick, who bowled fast off the longest run-up, 31 paces, by an Australian pace bowler, took 34 wicket on this tour for an average of 33.41. He joined the RAAF in 1939'. Australia Struggled to contain the 22-year old Len Hutton at the Oval when the future England Captain scored his record 364 runs. England's score in this Test, 903 for 7, was also a record. It was O'Reilly's last English tour and he missed his usual bowling partner, Clarrie Grimmett, who had been controversially dropped for Frank Ward However, Australia retained the Ashes. This was the last tour before the war, the next tour, by Bradman's Invincibles, was 10 years away
