Autograph book containing the rare signature of Guy Gibson, signed ("Guy Gibson w/c"), Wing Commander, Victoria Cross recipient and CO of the squadron famous for the Dam Busters raid during the Second World War; album also contains the signatures of the 1945/46 Manchester United Football team on a sheet of faintly lined paper pasted to album page, including the signatures of Henry Cockburn, signed ("H Cockburn"), Joe Walton, signed ("J Walton"), Stan Pearson and others, facing album page contains a black and white wallet-sized photograph of Henry Cockburn, loosely mounted, with signature beneath, oblong 8vo, contemporary calf gilt, rubbed, c. 1943-1946 Guy Gibson is, to this day, one of the most celebrated and tragic heroes of the Second World War. On 19 September 1944, Gibson's plane crashed in the Netherlands, killing him at the age of 26. Winston Churchill in a letter to Gibson's widow, exclaimed that "his name will not be forgotten; it will for ever be enshrined in the most wonderful records of our country" (Richard Morris Guy Gibson, 1994, p.311) Pen annotations made by the owner of the album note that the signature was obtained at the Wings for Victory exhibition held in Manchester on 20th March 1943, which Gibson opened. The next day, on 21st March 1943, Gibson arrived at Scampton RAF base to begin training of the 617 Squadron.
