Whitney (bottom left corner), who then headed the California Geological Survey: “I hope I shall be able to be present at the next meeting of the Academy. It is my intention to do so, and that nothing will prevent me. To the expectation to have the pleasure of seeing you….” The Swiss-born Guyot, Princeton Professor of Geology, probably refers to the National Academy of Sciences, founded just two years before, with both he and Whitney among its original incorporators. Guyot was also a pioneering meteorologist whose research led to establishment of the US Weather Bureau. Whitney was renowned on both coasts, being the founder of the California Geological Survey, President of the California Academy of Sciences, and, when he received this letter, Professor of Geology at Harvard. Both Mount Whitney and the Whitney Glacier were named in his honor. Lot Amendments Condition: A few faint yellow spots; near fine. Item number: 248988
