Autograph letter signed (“H Grattan”), to the publishers Cadell & Davis, asking if they would consider publishing a three-volume life of Lord Charlemont (“…The author is a Mr Hardy – he was a member of the irish house of commons & an excellent speaker – the life contains a history of irish affairs for 20 years & the character of the men who have shewn in Ireland for the last 50…”), together with Cadell & Davis’s retained reply and a later reader’s report sent to them by John Gillies, the classicist and Historiographer Royal for Scotland (“…there is a raciness & animation that compensates for other deficiencies…The author will be considered as belonging to a party, but he has more, I think, of the Irishman than the party-man…”), Grattan’s letter two pages, 4to, integral address leaf (partly laid down) on the verso of which the reply is drafted, printed identification slip, Gillies’s letter two pages, 4to, integral blank (partly laid down), 13 July and 26 July 1805 and 24 November 1808 Francis Hardy’s life of Lord Charlemont – an important source book for Irish history – was published by Cadell in 1810, as Memoirs of the Political and Private Life of James Caulfield, Earl of Charlemont, Knight of St Patrick, &c. Letters by Grattan are rare: we can find no record of any having appeared at auction.
