Shennan', written on printed notepaper of 'Chiefswood, Melrose, N[orth] B[ritain]', tipped into a second edition of Lang's 'In the Wrong Paradise and Other Stories', 1887, with a printed note 'From the Author', bookplate of D.A. Shennan, original cloth, octavo, 1890 A most accommodating fish Is he who lies in stream or pot. Who rises frequent as you wish At silver doctor, or a Jock Scott Or any other fly you've got In all the piscatory clans, - You strike, but ah, you strike him not, He is the Salmo Irritans... Since this manuscript is written on notepaper of the place where the poem was composed it may well be the first version of it. It was first published in the Fishing Gazette. Lang was the author of Angling Sketches, in which the phrase 'Salmo irritans' occurs in his essay 'A Tweedsmuir Sketch'. There are two reconsidered readings in later versions. Chiefswood had been owned by Sir Walter Scott and his son-in-law, Lockhart. Collections of Andrew Lang's manuscripts are at Harvard, the Lockwood Library and the Honnold Library, Claremont, in America and various institutions in Britain.
