Presentation copy, inscribed on front free endpaper by James Russell Lowell: "To J.B. Harrison/from W.D. Howells./With the assistance of/J.R. Lowell/Cambridge, 4th Sept, 1866" and with an additional inscription below by Howells: "Sa vero; ma non me ne/ricordo./W.D. Howells". Including several marginal manuscript annotations presumably by Harrison. Publisher's full purple cloth-covered boards, stamped in blind and in gilt, spine ends chipped, boards lightly rubbed; all edges trimmed; pale yellow endpapers; text lightly toned. BAL 9547. Presentation copy to John Baxter Harrison (1835-1907), Unitarian minister, journalist, and contributor to the Atlantic Monthly where he wrote on the lives of ordinary Americans.
