CGC certified: Fine- (5.5). Cream to off-white pages. Cover: Jack Kirby Dick Ayres. Story and art: Stan Lee, Jack Kirby Dick Ayres. Origin and 1st appearance: The Avengers. GPAnalysis Stats for 2021: A 5.0 sold for $8000 in April 2021; a 5.5 sold for $9288 in September 2021. Marvel's publisher Martin Goodman, pleased with the success of the Fantastic Four, ordered two more team books, resulting in the simultaneous launchings of the Avengers and the X-Men in September 1963. Where the FF owed much to Kirby's previous Challengers of the Unknown, The Avengers were indebted to the Justice League of America, in that both teams largely comprised characters who were already successful in their own titles. "During this period, Goodman told Stan, 'Let's get a book and put them all together.' So Stan and Jack created The Avengers.... Goodman finally had his version of the Justice League." —Ronin Ro, Tales to Astonish: Jack Kirby Stan Lee, and the American Comic Book Revolution. Bloomsbury: 2004, p. 81. A limited edition of 150 softcover and 15 hardcover catalogues is available. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $30, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Ten of the 15 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now.
