Autograph Sketch Signed ("Wernher von Braun"), 11 by 16 inches, [Huntsville, AL?], April 20, 1953, on graph paper, extensively annotated, tipped at extremities to mat and framed to 19 by 25 inches. Entitled "Baby Satellite: third stage (total)," this sketch is the basis for artist Fred Freeman's illustrations in the June 27, 1953 issue of Collier's magazine. Von Braun's article on the "Baby Space Station" appeared in that issue as part of the series "Man will Conquer Space Soon!", and described a small satellite designed to stay in orbit for sixty days, carrying three rhesus monkeys, TV cameras, antennae, solar mirrors, and Geiger counters. The present sketch provides a cross section of the satellite and three further views.
