[BACHE, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN] Truth Will Out! The Foul Charges of the Tories Against the Editor of the Aurora. [Philadelphia: circa 1798]. First edition. Modern red morocco backed marbled boards. 9 x 5 inches (23 x 13 cm); [4] 12 pp., with two original blanks at end, an uncut copy. Spotting and light staining, mostly in the margin and to blanks. This work is in reply to Federalist charges that Bache was an agent of the French government. It is sometimes attributed to William Duane. Bache (1769-1798) was the grandson of Benjamin Franklin Founder of the Jeffersonian newspaper the Philadelphia Aurora, he frequently attacked Federalist political leaders including Presidents Washington and Adams, the latter over the X.Y.Z. Affair. In June 1798 he was arrested for common-law seditious libel before the law had even passed but died of Yellow Fever before standing trial.
