Contemporary manuscript ownership inscription on title, five last pages restored with defects, otherwise very good. The book had been published by Antonio Manuzio, son of Aldus, in 1543 and most of the printed copies destroyed in a fire. A second edition in 1545 followed. The Aldine Press had edited very few travel accounts. This early 16th century collection of travel accounts in the Levant contains the voyages of Giosafat Barbaro (in Tana 1436 and in Persia through the Black Sea 1471), of Ambrogio Contarini (in Persia again through the Black Sea in 147377) and of Luigi Roncinotto (in Persia and India in 1529). It also includes Rambettis account of Sultans campaign of 1538 against Diu. Barbaro travelled in Tana , which was still a Venetian colony in the sea of Azov, before the fall of Constantinople. Contarini was a Venetian Ambassador to Huzun Hasan. He tried to reach him in Tabriz through Pontos area in 1473 and 1477. All these accounts are unique testimonies for the Levant.
