BARRAS, Paul-François, Vicomte de (1755-1829, Revolutionary politician). Autograph letter signed to an unidentified correspondent, Paris, 'ce 4 vendemiaire an 2 de la republique' [25 September 1793], 3 pages, 4to (small traces of mounting on verso).
BARRAS, Paul-François, Vicomte de (1755-1829, Revolutionary politician). Autograph letter signed to an unidentified correspondent, Paris, 'ce 4 vendemiaire an 2 de la republique' [25 September 1793], 3 pages, 4to (small traces of mounting on verso). A colourful description of a stormy session of the Convention at which Barras defied those who had denounced Fréron and himself, blaming them for the troubles in the Midi, and Fréron accused them of Marat's assassination. 'Depuis longtemps nous devions etre denoncés par granet, moise baile et escudier ... mais les laches n'ont pas osé la faire ... J'y lont trainés au bruit des huées de la convention et des tribunes qui à chaque phrase (?) de mon discours ... aplaudissoient vivement; freron à parlé avec éloquence et avec force. Il les a accusés d'etre les auteurs de l'assassinat demarat; enfin moise baile à eu la parole; il à balbutié quelques mots ... '. Written during the first weeks of the Terror which commenced on 5 September. Barras was deputy for the Var in the National Convention. Marat had been assassinated by Charlotte Corday on 13 July.
