BARROIS, Jean-Baptiste Joseph (1784-1855) -- Catalogue des livres de la bibliothèque de feu M. J. Barrois . Paris: Victor Tilliard, 31 March 1856. 8 o (219 x 137 mm). Contemporary red half morocco, marbled sides, t.e.g. PRICED in a contemporary hand. Barrois was a French politician who achieved fame as a book and manuscript collector. In 1849 he sold his collection of 702, mainly French, manuscripts to the fourth Earl of Ashburnham for £6,000, of which thirty-three turned out to have been stolen from what was then the Bibliothèque Royale in Paris. His library, discussed by G. Brunet, contained some highly important xylographica, incunables and French sixteenth century books. He was also the author of a work on the origin of languages. Carbonel, the son of Joseph-Noël, virtuoso on the galoubet (a small flute) and member of the Paris orchestra, was a singer, private singing teacher and composer for voice, piano and violin.
