Contemporary red half morocco, marbled sides, t.e.g. PRICED in a contemporary hand. Barrois was a French politician who achieved fame as a book and manuscript collector. In 1849 he sold his collection of 702, mainly French, manuscripts to the fourth Earl of Ashburnham for £6,000, of which thirty-three turned out to have been stolen from what was then the Bibliothèque Royale in Paris. His library, discussed by G. Brunet, contained some highly important xylographica, incunables and French sixteenth century books. He was also the author of a work on the origin of languages.
