The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Chicago and New York: Geo. M. Hill Co, 1900. 262 pp. 8vo (211 x 165 mm). Illustrated by W. W. Denslow. Publisher's green cloth, stamped and lettered in green and red on covers and spine, pictorial endpapers, housed in a lettered clamshell case. Upper cover with Lion motif and lower cover with Tin Woodman, Dorothy, and Scarecrow, spine stamped with Toto. Condition: hinges cracked, some light browning and soiling; covers thumbsoiled, spine tips worn; inscription on front free endpaper dated December 25, 1902. first edition, second printing with all corrections and publisher’s imprint in serifed type in red on spine . The Wizard of Oz in its first hundred years has proved to be not only the most beloved but also the most controversial of American juvenile classics. The first edition is also one of the most elaborately designed children’s books ever published with 24 color plates and countless textual pictures in varying colors. Perhaps more has been written on the complex publication history of The Wizard of Oz than any other twentieth-century American juvenile title. Although Jocob Blank in his pioneering bibliography Peter Parley to Penrod (1938) described X, Y and Z states of the first edition, there apparently were only two printings that resulted in many mixed copies. The 1900 Hill edition of this great children’s classic in any state is still highly desirable.
