BEAUMONT, William (1785-1853)]. LOVELL, Joseph (1788-1836). "A Case of Wounded Stomach," in The Medical Recorder of original papers and intelligence in medicine and surgery , vol. 8, 1825, pp. 14-19. Philadelphia: Thomas H. Palmer for James Webster and E. Littell, etc., 1825. -- William BEAUMONT. "Further Experiments on the Case of Alexis San Martin, who was wounded in the stomach by a load of duck-shot, detailed in the Recorder for Jan. 1825," in The Medical Recorder of original papers and intelligence in medicine and surgery , vol. 9, 1826, pp. 94-97. Philadelphia: William Brown for James Webster, E. Littell, etc., 1826. 2 volumes in 3, 8 o (216 x 128 mm). 4 engraved plates, one folding, one printed in red with additional hand-coloring, woodcut text illustrations. (Foxed, vol. 8/2 with dampstain to last half of volume, vol. 9 with 5 leaves partly detached from sewing.) Contemporary half sheep, marbled boards (slight wear to corners and joints). FIRST EDITIONS. Beaumont's first two reports on the case of Alexis St. Martin, which gave him the opportunity to analyze the process of digestion. His complete account was published in 1833 as Experiments and Observations on the Gastric Juice, and the Physiology of Digestion (see lot ____). The first article was published by mistake under the name of Joseph Lovell, Surgeon-General of the U.S. Army, to whom Beaumont had sent it for distribution; the error was corrected by the editors of the journal in the following note (vol. 8, p. 840): "A mistake was made, in stating that the case of wound of the stomach produced by the penetration of a ball, was communicated by Dr. Lovell, for the January Number of this year. It should have been mentioned as reported by Dr. William Beaumont; and also, that it occurred at the post of Mackinaw. We should be obliged to Dr. Beaumont for any further particulars of this case; which was considered as highly interesting, instructive, and well drawn up." Garrison-Morton 987.1, 987.2; Norman 150, 151. (3)
