Magnificent copper engraved bird's-eye plan by Georg Hoefnagel made for the 5th vol. of Braun & Hogenberg's monumental "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" (1572-1616), published in Cologne and issued in Amsterdam by F. de Wit The map shows the home town of the author at the height of its splendour. Busy streets and numerous churches and houses are surrounded by heavy town walls with bastions. On the left side is the arsenal. In both lower corners: poems glorifying the "magnificentia urbis Antverpianae". With key to 25 major monuments. Coming and going ships are seen near the river banks and in the Scheldt river. Coats of arms of Brabant and Antwerp in both top corners.
