Sex Rivalry in Marriage', 7 July [19]21; 'The Reform of Divorce', 21 March [19]23; Four untitled essays, on unmarried mothers, women in France, birth control, and the rights of married professional women to work, 8 February - 11 May [19]23; 'The Prize Fight', 6 December [19]19; 'The great games crisis: Britain's position in the World', 2 August 1921; 'Footballers as professional entertainers', 18 January 1923; Untitled essay on Marcel Proust 25 January 1923; 'The fourth Armistice day', 8 November [19]21, reflecting on the end of the Great War; 'The Complete Fusser', 9 September [19]17; 'About Being Unwell: Doctors and self-doctors', 14 August [19]21; all including corrections and emendations, 3 titles written in pencil in a different hand, the essays of various lengths (1½-5 pages, 4to) together approximately 41½ pages, 4to ; blanks, tipped on to the leaves of nine albums, 20th-century red half morocco; and: autograph and typed fragments of drafts for plays, including: 'London Life' (written with Edward Knoblock), 2 pages, 8vo , in pencil and 4½ pages, 4to , typed with autograph corrections (1922); 'The Return Journey' (part of Acts II and III), 3 pages in autograph and 25 typed pages, 4to (1928); a typed fragment of dialogue from 'Flora' (1927); autograph manuscript signed of an article on the lack of reward for authors, 2 pages, 4to (1928); Bennett writes of meeting Proust at a party given by Misia Edwards: 'a dark pale man of somewhat less than forty, black hair and moustache; peculiar; urbane one would have said and ideal figure, physically, for Bunthorne: he continually twisted his body, arms and legs into strange curves', and denies that Proust is 'a supreme genius'.The later essays also reflect his interest in changing social customs, and the impact of the breakdown of his first marriage. The essays are published in Self and Self-management: Essays about existing (1918), and Things that have interested me , 2nd series (1923). The Return Journey , based on a Faust theme in a Cambridge setting, had a disastrous opening even though Gerald du Maurier took the principal role. Bennett declined to rewrite it despite the actor's pleas. (18)
