Bentley Motors Limited is a British manufacturer founded on 18 January 1919 by Walter Owen Bentley known as W.O. Bentley or just 'W O'. Bentley had been previously known for his range of rotary aero-engines in World War I, the most famous being the Bentley BR1 as used in later versions of the Sopwith Camel. After the war W. O. Bentley designed and made production cars that won the Le Mans 24 hours in 1924 and following models which repeated those successes each June 1927, 1928, 1929 and 1930. Purchased by Rolls-Royce in 1931, when production was moved from London to Derby and later to Crewe, the business is still based in Crewe, where their main production facilities are. The R-Type is the second series of post-war Bentleys, replacing the Mk. VI. Essentially a larger-boot version of the Mk. VI, the R-type is regarded by some as a stop-gap before the introduction of the S series cars in 1955. As with its predecessor, a standard body was available as well as coachbuilt versions by firms including H.J. Mulliner & Co., Park Ward, Harold Radford, Freestone and Webb amongst others. Even by this date, there was little difference (other than the radiator grilles and the carburation) between the standard Bentley R-Type and the Rolls Royce Silver Dawn, though Bentley was still the more popular marque. The vendor has been the proud owner of this Bentley since July 1981 and has used the R-Type with another similar Bentley throughout the 1980's as part of a very successful wedding hire business. When the time came, both he and his wife could not bear to part with the Bentley and it was enjoyed for high days and holidays. Maintenance was never an issue as the vendor had, prior to retirement, a thriving garage repair business. The two-tone paintwork, blue over grey together with the grey leather trim and blue piping combine to make this a very pleasing colour scheme. The vendor has always been very fastidious in looking after his much loved Bentley's. Supplied with a V5 document and a complete original tool kit, this Bentley R-Type with automatic transmission, awaits a new owner, but with a degree of sadness from the current one.
