The Holy Bible, Translated from the Latin Vulgate: Diligently Compared with the Hebrew, Greek, and Other Editions, in Divers Languages; and First Published by The English College at Doway, Anno 1609. Newly Revised, and Corrected, According to the Clementine Edition of the Scriptures. With Annotations for Elucidating the Principal Difficulties of Holy Writ . Philadelphia: Carey, Stewart, and Co., 1790. 2 volumes in one, 4 o (250 x 204 mm). General title, approbations leaf, 2 leaves of subscribers' names, no title to vol. 2 as issued, text in double-column. (Lower corner of 5N2 torn away with loss of a few letters, a few headlines and page numbers cropped, some browning and spotting.) Contemporary panelled calf (rubbed). Provenance : Susanah Lambaert (inscription on title: "Susanah Lambaert 19th December 1813. Presented to her by her Mother, being the Translation most in use by the Roman Catholics, of which religion was her father Herman Lambaert"; a 2-page manuscript genealogy of the Wynkoop and Lambaert familes appears on the verso of the final leaf in vol. I and the recto of the facing blank; Susanah Lambeart was married to James Vanuxem 4 days after her mother's inscription); Michael Zinman (bookplate). FIRST AMERICAN EDITION OF THE DOUAY VERSION OF THE BIBLE, AND THE FIRST QUARTO BIBLE PUBLISHED IN ENGLISH IN THE UNITED STATES. This edition, a substantial quarto, was based on Challoner's second edition of 1763-4. This copy bears a fine provenance: Henry Lambaert was the son-in-law of Henry Wynkoop (1737-1816), Delegate and representative from Pennsylvania. He was a delegate to the provincial conferences of 18 July 1774 and 18 June 1775 and a member of the Continental Congress from 1779-82. He later was a judge in Bucks County and was elected to the First Congress, 4 March 1789-3 March 1791.
