Geneva: Matthieu Berjon, 1605. 8° (169 x 109mm). Lacking the Apocrypha (96 lvs.). Pages ruled in red. (Light dampstain in final few leaves.) Contemporary Geneva binding of red morocco richly tooled in gilt, ornaments on sides built up with foliatate tools incorporating ovals, diamonds and roundels painted green, gilt "fish scale" border, flat spine gilt and painted green in matching style (very discreet repairs to joints), gilt turn-ins, edges gilt and gauffered, two chased silver fore-edge clasps; marbled slipcase. Provenance : Fred. Raisin, lawyer in Geneva, 1909 (inscription); Jean Furstenberg (booklabel). A rare and elaborate example of Renaissance bookbinding at Geneva. Schunke describes a binding by the same master on a 1569 Bible in her work on the great period of Geneva binding ("Der Genfer Bucheinband des sechzehnten Jahrhunders," Jahrbuch der Einbandkunst IVa, 1937).
